 Recumbent Animal Procedure:

  1. Check spread bar to verify it is set up like picture above.
  2. Attach spread bar to lift apparatus and move out of way until animal is ready to connect and be raised.
  3. If using sling pads, slide over slings and pull D rings through slots.
  4. Apply halter and lead rope then head protector to animal.
  5. Sedate animal if appropriate and available.
  6. If using complete lift system, attach chest Y strap to front center sling center D ring and leg straps to rear sling middle D’s. Lay out flat to assist pull under animal.
  7. Feed a 1” webbing guide line under animal and attach to sling(s) to pull back under belly.
  8. Pull body sling(s) under belly and position one behind front legs and one in front of rear legs. Be sure slings are even around animal. Hold slings in place by feeding temporary support strap through sling loops.
  9. Guide chest Y strap between front legs and around neck. Make sure straps are longer than needed as they can not be lengthened under load but are easy to shorten. Feed temporary strap through connector rings.
  10. Guide rear straps between hind legs and on either side of tail. Make sure straps are longer than needed as they can not be lengthened under load but are easy to shorten. Feed temporary strap through connector rings.
  11. Attach back spider if wanting to keep slings from falling off animal when quick release ram hooks are pulled.
  12. Check that tail is free and clear.
  13. Position spread bar over animal and remove temporary support strap from ends of slings. Feed front sling loops onto quick attach strap making sure the sling is straight and not twisted, then feed the chest Y connector rings and secure the D ring end into ram hook. Feed rear sling loops onto rear quick attach strap (has 2 carabiners) then feed the rear straps connector rings and secure the D ring end into ram hook. Verify the Ram-Hooks are closed and locked.
  14. Attach tag line(s) to D rings to assist lateral movement and make sure the instant release pull rope is minded and wont tangle in debris.
  15. Raise/lower slow and steady. Animal may struggle on initial raise and as feet touch ground.
  16. Animal handler control of head is critical to keep animal steady and directed away from haul team or danger areas.
  17. When animal is on ground and steady on their legs, give a hard pull to release the instant release hooks.
  18. Allow animal to

Notes:

  • If animal is thrashing you may need to quickly raise then up so they don’t pull tripod over.
  • Be aware that the spread bar can swing dramatically when released under load.
  • When rigging a rescue strap on animal, make sure it is underneath the Becker slings or the strap can interfere with the slings when animal is raised.
