Introduction to Field Operations is mandatory and prepares you to deploy with WASART! It’s the place to learn our deployment regulations as well as animal behavior and basic animal handling skills in the field and during transport for the species we most commonly get asked to help.

Our training is geared towards animal rescue and evacuation in emergency situations. You’ll learn how to assist the Technical Rescue Team (TRT) in common rescue scenarios such as setup and use of the tripod, rope handling basics, and rescue litter setup and carrying practice.

Qualify to be more involved during a rescue, or gain new skills to help in your everyday life. Meet exciting and really nice people who will mentor you during your training and beyond. Everyone works together as a team and each person can help in a deployment!

Introduction to Field Operations includes an online class portion as well as and in-the-field training. In-the-field training is offered twice a year: in Snohomish in the spring, and Buckley in the fall.

Links to the online segment and in-person sessions will be provided before the class; there will not be an additional cost for the online instruction, which will remain available throughout your tenure as a WASART member.

Introduction to Field Operations consists of online segments and a robust one-day in-person class. We strongly recommend that all participants complete the online and self-study portions of the class prior to participating in the in-person class.

Prerequisites

In addition to online training provided by WASART, you are required to complete the following training offered by other agencies before being eligible to deploy:

  • Human First Aid, CPR, & Blood-borne Pathogens waiver or online training
  • FEMA IS 100–Basic Incident Command System
  • FEMA IS 200–Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
  • FEMA IS 700–National Incident Management System, An Introduction
  • FEMA IS 800–National Response Framework, An Introduction

In addition you are required to provide proof that your Tetanus vaccination is current. (A booster is required every 10 years or sooner.)

Personal Protective Gear (PPE) is required for all deployments. Though each WASART response vehicle has loaner gear in the event of an emergency, you should have your own properly fitting gear to use during the deployment. If you’re uncertain of what to get, the in-person class includes an overview of common selections.

The Member Resource page is a great place to get started in preparing for your online and in-personal trainings and your first deployment!

The online, independent, and  Tetanus vaccination certificate are all required to be completed within 90-days of the in-person training to be approved for deployment.
